Drawing Process

I love drawing with charcoal.  I have tried graphite, and while it seems more user friendly at times, I love the deep contrast charcoal creates and the matt finish.  I draw on archival quality, plate finish, bristol board paper.  I use a spray fixative on finished drawings to keep them from smudging.

Generally, I draw from photographs that I have taken. Photographs hold still a lot longer than live people, especially children.  Photographs also allow me more freedom with my art time.

I begin with a very basic outline, focusing mostly on the points of highest contrast and the placement of facial features.  These pictures show some of my drawing progress of Against the Chill.  This is one of my favorites.
